Planning your website

Generally speaking we have two types of clients / projects. Those who come to us knowing exactly what there site needs to do and how it will work. The other type has a general idea of what they want to achieve but needs us to fill in the blanks.

Either type works very well, as long as they know which one they are!

The first type gives detailed briefs, with deadlines and milestones. Then (in an ideal world ) leave you alone to build it. However what tends to happen is a few days or weeks into the build they have new ideas and we have to try and allow for them.

The problem is this leads to missed deadlines and increased costs which always seem to come as a surprise to the client!

The other type asks for a general site "ecommerce to sell shoes" and we then supply ideas on how it could work and the overall business flow. This again can cause the project to be delayed.

The point I am making is that for a smooth project flow it is vital to:

  • Decide exactly on what is being built before work starts, we are more than happy to help with this stage. It is better to spend a week planning now than add a month to the build later on.
  • Once work starts - avoid any changes until the site is at least at Beta testing stage. You would not ask an architect to add another floor to your house half way through building it! In fact, on larger projects we would not attempt changes until the core of the site is built.
