Make money online

A cautionary tale, about running a website. This could be called "Build it and they will come - oh ... no they won't"
Some people still have an impression that running a website is a route to easy money, and these are the people that find out the hard way that it's just not the case.

  • Paying for the website is only the start, so let's look at what you will need to do - once the site is finished.
  • Let's assume you have a simple ecommerce store and you have just been told the site is ready. You now need to make sure all of these things are in place:
  • Choose and buy a domain name, and get it setup up properly!
  • Get a merchant account arranged with your bank
  • Open accounts with all your suppliers
  • Have accounts in place, or at least have decided on a delivery company
  • Take or get good quality images of your entire product in the right format and size.
  • Write descriptions of all your products
  • Enter all the products onto the system
  • Have someone available to take telephone queries - it's now a legal requirement to have physical contact details on a website.
  • Get your recording keeping in place to monitor sales, expenses, vat etc
  • Write content for the rest of your site - about us, privacy policy, terms and conditions etc
  • Decide on a launch strategy - if you just turn it on I can tell you exactly what will happen....NOTHING
  • Undertake online and offline marketing and promotion
  • Get your site on relevant forums and websites
  • Submit to relevant directories - i3 are on www.website-design-directory.co.uk as an example
  • Promote and optimise your site to search engines
  • Add new products regularly ( or with non ecommerce sites add or change at least one page a week )

As you can see, its not a quick easy project, but the return can be huge if done correctly
